Winifred N. ‘Billie’ Kaufman, 92, died at home on Friday, February 12, as a result of a stroke nine years ago, aortic stenosis, and Alzheimer's. A memorial service was held Tuesday, February 16 at Seven Lakes Country Club.

Mrs. Kaufman was the first in her family to be born in a hospital, at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1917. She attended Pratt Institute and left to dance with the Roxyettes in New York City and Washington, DC. Later she worked on Seventh Avenue as a model and head of the showroom while moonlighting at night as a dance instructor with Arthur Murray Studios. Then she moved on to the retail world as a buyer for bridals then suits and coats at Hahne and Company in Newark, NJ.

She married in 1951 and did a stellar job of raising three children. When they were older she taught furniture reupholstering classes for adult education for twenty years in Montgomery County, Maryland.

Mrs. Kaufman moved to Seven Lakes in 1986 where she was semi-active at the Seven Lakes Country Club, Tennis Club, Meals for the Aged, and Moore Regional Hospital.

She is survived by her husband of fifty-eight years, Jim; her children, Annette Wirdzek and Beth Kaufman, and son, James, and three granddaughters. Her remains were donated to the Medical School at UNC Chapel Hill. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to EMS of Seven Lakes, 969 Seven Lakes North, West End, NC 27376; or to First Health Hospice of Pinehurst, 150 Applecross Road, Pinehurst, NC  28374.
