Mary Ann ‘Anne’ Spence, 84, formerly of Seven Lakes and Pinehurst, died Thursday, January 14, in Falls Church, Virginia. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, April 10, at the Village Chapel in Pinehurst. Her ashes will be interred at The Chapel in the Pines at Seven Lakes.

Born in Tarentum, Pa., Mrs. Spence was the only child of John and Alice Dyer. She began her singing career at the age of fourteen and received musical training at Syracuse University and Juilliard School of Music in New York City, N.Y. She received a diploma in business and combined her education to become a private secretary to the symphony conductor, Leopold Stokowski. She was also assistant producer of The Metropolitan Opera auditions of ABC-TV.

While living in New York City, she held positions as executive secretary for Yale Alumni Fund; secretary to the vice president of the N.Y. Trust Co.; and as a soloist at Church of the Ascension, St. Mark’s in the Bowery and Riverside Church.

Mrs. Spence and her husband, Benjamin, who passed away in 1984, retired to Seven Lakes in 1980. She was the soprano soloist at the Village Chapel for seven years, and then stayed on to sing in the choir until she retired in 2005 after twenty-five years.

She was active in volunteer work in the area, as co-founder of “The Samaritans” for the Sacred Heart Church, then with the Coalition for Human Care in Southern Pines. She was trained as a bereavement counselor and conducted workshops for seventeen years in the Pinehurst community.

Mrs. Spence is survived by her daughter, Alicia, of Alexandria, Va., and her son, Christopher, of Aberdeen. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Village Chapel Music Fund, or the Coalition for Human Care in Southern Pines.
